Genres

Fables  

A usually short narrative making an edifying or cautionary point and often employing as characters animals that speak and act like humans. *

Fairy Tales

A tale usually told to children that has legendary deeds and creatures.

Fantasy

An imaginative or fanciful work, esp. one dealing with supernatural or unnatural events or characters. *

Folk Tales

A tale or legend originating and traditional among a people or folk, esp. one forming part of the oral tradition of the common people. *

Historical Fiction

A novel set among actual events or a specific period of history.*

Mystery

A novel, short story, play, or film whose plot involves a crime or other event that remains puzzlingly unsettled until the very end.*

Realistic Fiction

Stories that could happen to anyone.  There is no magic or fantasy.

Science Fiction

A form of fiction that draws imaginatively on scientific knowledge and speculation in its plot, setting, theme, etc.*
