We're In Full Swing! 

Reading:  In reading, during our Early/Late Bird time, we are reading from our leveled books.  We are also using our new reading series from Houghton Mifflin.

Math:   Boy have we been busy in Math!  We're not just "monkeying" around when it comes to addition strategies.  Here are some strategies that you can try at home.

• Making Ten:  9 + 1 = 10,  8 + 2 = 10,  7 + 3 = 10 . . . . Think of the different combinations that equal 10.
• Counting On:  8 + 3 = 11  Start with the 8 and count on 3 more.  Be sure to begin with the largest number.
• Doubles:  6 + 6 = 12,  4 + 4 = 8
• Fast Tens:  10 + 4 = 14,  10 + 6 = 16

Science:  In Science, we have started a unit call People Grow and Change.  In this unit, we will learn about the ways people grow and change during their lives.  The unit will include the ways bones and muscles work together to move the body and how the heart and lungs work together to carry oxygen to all parts of the body.  We will also learn about the process of digestion.

The Garden:  We harvested the carrots and beans that were planted in the Spring.  After the children harvested the carrots and beans we brought some of the vegetables back to the classroom to do some "garden math".  We worked wth partners to measure the length of the carrots and we removed the beans from their pods so we could do some estimation. 

The children have returned to the garden to plant a winter garden.  They planted carrots and lettuce, wrote in their garden journals, and listened to a garden story.  To our amazement we were awarded with the "Giant Carrot" because our class harvested the largest carrot.  We will be able to keep the "Giant Carrot" until the next harvesting. 

The garden can be intergrated in to so many areas of our daily curriculum.  We are so lucky to have this wonderful resource.
