SCHOOL SCHEDULE Our regular school hours are listed below. Occasionally our schedule will be adjusted. You will receive advance notice of any change in the schedule. EARLY/LATE GROUP: Our Kindergarten through third grade students attend school on a staggered schedule. Staggered schedules are developed by the teacher. You will be notified of schedule division during the second week of school. TUESDAYS: All students in grades 1-5 attend from 8:30-2:00 on Tuesdays. MINIMUM DAYS: Students are dismissed at 1:30 p.m. if the teachers are attending an evening event. Conference weeks in November and March are minimum days, as well. KINDERGARTEN Our Kindergarten Schedule allows for more intensive small group learning and also provides more money to our program because of the class size reduction act. DISMISSAL: There is a teacher on duty for 10 minutes in front of the school to assist with the safe pickup of students. There is no playground supervision after school. Students must leave campus as soon as they are dismissed, unless they are attending a sponsored after school activity or one of the Recreation Department classes. Even if you permit your child to return to play in Ray Park after school, they must first leave campus and check in with a parent or other adult in charge. Information about Recreation Department sponsored activities is sent home periodically with the Thursday Packet. EARLY PICK-UP: If you will be picking your child up early during the school day, please send a note to the teacher that morning stating the time you will be coming for your child. Do not go to the classroom. Come to the office and you child will be notified you are waiting. Students will not be released during the day to anyone other than their parents without written or phone permission form their parents. ATTENDANCE Good attendance and arrival on time are crucial to your child's success at school! For every % of ADA funds we don't get, it costs the district $130,000. We DO NOT get funds when kids are absent. We don't want them to come to school sick, but we CAN NOT afford to have kids miss school for vacations! ABSENCE: The office should be notified by phone as early as possible if your child will be absent. Your call assures that your child is safe and has not been injured on the way to school. The absence reporting telephone number is 259-3860. Please do not leave absence calls on teachers' voice extensions. If you are unable to call in your child's absence, a written note should be sent when your child returns. Absences are excused for illness, doctor/dental appointments, or funeral of an immediate relative. Absences for other reasons and unreported absences are considered unexcused. We LOSE STATE FUNDS if students DO NOT attend school whether it's excused OR unexcused! TARDY: Students who arrive late to school must report to the office and sign in before going to their classroom. In the case of younger children, the parent must sign the child in at the office before taking the child to the classroom. Chronic tardiness will be regarded as a serious problem and will require a conference. More than 15 tardies, may result in a police report for habitual truancy and after 20 tardies, may result in court jurisdiction. 180 DAYS: The school year consists of 180 days. We request that you do all that is possible to arrange vacations around the school calendars. Work will not be sent home to make up for absences of less than five days. We strongly encourage daily attendance for your child's optimal education. STUDENT SAFETY EMERGENCY FORMS: Emergency Forms should be updated whenever there is a change. Please be sure to notify the office immediately of any changes to home address or home phone number. It is also extremely important that we have correct work numbers for parents in case of emergency. In an emergency, the parents will be notified first. However, if parents cannot be reached, we must have at least two local available relatives or friends to contact in case of illness or emergency. Children are released only to an adult listed on the emergency form. VISITORS: For the safety of all children, all adults entering the school buildings or yard for any reason including dropping off lunches and picking up children for appointments are required to sign in at the office. If you have scheduled an observation, visitors are required to sign in and out. Classroom observations should be 30 minutes at most and must not interfere with teaching and learning. MESSAGES: All arrangements for the day should be made before you child leaves home. Delivering messages causes a disruption to the classroom. The office will do our best to communicate messages to students during non instructional time if there is an emergency situation. Please be sure your child knows who will pick them up daily or if they are to walk home. Also make sure your child knows what he/she is to do in the event it is raining after school. Students are not allowed to use the phone to make after-school play arrangements. PARKING/TRAFFIC: All parking spaces in the parking lot are reserved for the staff. The curb painted white in front of the school is for loading and unloading only. There is no parking in front of the school. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE UNATTENDED IF YOU ARE IN FRONT OF THE WHITE CURB AS DESIGNATED BY THE BURLINGAME POLICE DEPARTMENT. Please DO NOT DRIVE UP DEVEREUX during pick-up times! Please DO NOT TURN YOUR CAR AROUND IN FRONT OF THE PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF ZONE! Please DO NOT PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF KIDS ACROSS THE STREET… driveways are blocked; kids and/or adults are jay walking between the crosswalks and compromising safety! Please DO NOT LOITER ON SIDEWALKS…kids walk around you into the street! VISIT OR WAIT ON THE GRASS. Please be considerate & MOVE FORWARD IN THE PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF ZONE… gaps mean that more people may choose unsafe and inconsiderate ways to pick-up kids! Please DO NOT PICK-UP AT THE PARK…we have 2nd and 3rd graders waiting sometimes in the rain or as late as 5:00 on their own in the park…NO MATTER WHAT AGE OR HOW SHORT THE WAIT TIME IS…This could be UNSAFE without adult supervision Please USE THE CROSSWALKS ONLY TO SAFELY CROSS THE STREET Please LOAD & UNLOAD YOUR CHILD AT CURB-SIDE ONLY…NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET! FIRE DRILLS: Fire drills occur monthly. The time of day is varied in order to be prepared in a variety of circumstances. Each classroom has a student fire marshal to assist with accounting for all children. Each classroom has a designated area to line up on the asphalt, according to room number. When the fire alarm sounds, everyone must leave the building immediately and report to the asphalt. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: The school also participates in periodic "Duck, Cover and Hold" drills to practice safe procedures in the event of an earthquake or other disaster. We also practice lock downs for hazardous air or unsafe situations on campus. The Burlingame School District provides a comprehensive "Civil Disaster & Other Emergencies Action Plan" booklet for every classroom and school office in the district. The Action Plan outlines specific procedures and staff responsibilities in the event of an emergency. A copy of the Action Plan booklet is in the office. DISASTER KITS: Backpacks have been placed in each classroom with disaster supplies. STUDENT HEALTH ILLNESS: Lincoln School does not have a school nurse. If your child complains of not feeling well in the morning or has any of the following symptoms, please keep him/her home until they are well. If your child becomes ill while at school, you will be called to pick him/her up. A child may be too sick to attend school if the child has a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, sign of symptoms of illness (e.g. persistent crying, extreme irritability, uncontrolled coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing, lethargy)> No pupil, while infected with any contagious disease, shall be allowed to remain at school. If the child has any of the following diagnoses from a health provider, the child may not attend school until 24 hours after treatment has started: strep throat, scarlet fever or other strep infections, conjunctivitis/pink eye, scabies, or impetigo. If a child has chicken pox they may not attend school until all sores have a scab (usually 6 days). Please notify the office if your child has a contagious/infectious disease. HEAD LICE: The Burlingame School District has a NIT FREE policy. Head checks are done several times a year at school. You will be called to pick up your child if lice are detected. If a child has lice, ALL NITS must be removed before the child returns to school. If your child complains of itchy scalp, check for head lice. If your child has lice, please contact the school immediately. Nits (eggs) are easier to spot than lice. Eggs attach themselves firmly to hair shafts near the scalp. The most common areas for nits are around the neck and behind the ears. Nits resemble tiny pussy willow buds. Nits can be mistaken for dandruff, but unlike dandruff, they can't be easily brushed out of hair. If you have nits, apply shampoo treatment. Comb through the same section of hair at least 6 times with a professional nit comb. Do this everyday for 11 days since the last nit was discovered. Periodical checks are recommended. Lice are spread by close contact or using the hat comb, or brush of a person with lice. Soak combs and brushes for one hour in solution containing anti lice shampoo. Wash you child's sheets, blankets, pillowcases, towels, and any clothing worn in the last 72 hours in 140 degree water. Items which cannot be washed should be placed in an airtight plastic bag for three weeks. Vacuum rugs, sofas, and chairs daily. Vacuum your car throughly. Lice can affect us all so be compassionate and above all maintain the privacy of students identified as having head lice. MEDICINE: Medication must be stored and administered in the school office. All medication must be in the original bottle and labeled with the student's name. Students are not allowed to keep medicines with them in their classroom (this includes inhalers for asthma).
