TRIBES is an ongoing process to develop a positive environment that promotes human growth and learning. The cornerstone of Tribes are the four agreements and all the emcompassing attitudes. The Agreements are: *Attentive Listening: Students are taught and reminded to give the person who is speaking full attention and eye contact. They learn not to interrupt the speaker and to listen to the words as well as the feelings behind the words. *Appreciation/No put downs: A positive climate that builds self worth will develop when students are challenged to stop put down remarks and are encouraged to exchange statements of appreciation. *Active Participation (Right to Pass): Each student has the right to choose the extent to which he or she will share in a group activity. They may prefer not to share personal information or feelings at that moment and may wish to observe quietly for a short period of time. By having this option to pass, they can relax and instead of worrying about what they will say when their turn comes, they can focus on listening attentively to their classmates. *Mutual Respect: Within a school community this agreement means respect for: *Others, regardless of their race, gender, age, color or learning ability *Newcomers from other cities, states or countries *Teacher, parents and other caring adults *Personal property and individual privacy *Individual skills, talents and contributions The Tribes process is infused into the curriculum. It is a process that grows each year as the layers of experience and continued reinforcement work as one. All of the Franklin teachers and staff have completed a Tribes training course and bring its positive effects to their classrooms every single day. At home, parents can articulate what the four agreements mean to the family, discuss some of the Tribes agreements and how they can be used at home or other after school functions. At Franklin, Tribes has given teachers, students and parents a common framework to solve problems and enhance learning.
