MATH
* Texts: Houghton-Mifflen, Math Steps
* All processes, decimals, fractions, whole numbers, geometry, logical thinking, measurement, number sense, patterns and functions,
probability, negative numbers, basic algebra, graphs, scale drawings, data
tables, active participation, lots of problem solving, estimating, writing
explanations to math problems to show reasoning and undertanding.
* Grades based on daily homework, classwork, participation, math tests and projects.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading
* This is a literature based reading program --5-7 books read during the school year stressing comprehension and high levels of thinking in discussion and written work. Other text read will include:
* Harcourt Brace Text
* Silent Reading
* WEB Reading at home (Wonderfully Exciting Books)
* Read Aloud
* Grades based on homework, discussion, written work and student conferences.
Spelling / Vocabulary
* Formal spelling lists weekly
* One lesson a week, homework each day, test on Friday.
* Vocabulary words each week. Vocabulary stressed in subject areas as well.
* Grades based on homework, tests and classwork.
Writing / Grammar
* Writer’s Workshop
* Emphasis on 6 Traits of Writing:
Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions.
* Experience in writing genre: expressive, persuasive, informative, narrative
* Basic Convention Skills / Daily Oral Language
* Editing and Revising - Use of a check in the margin; students find their own errors
* Notetaking and paragraph writing integrated into different subjects (state report, colonial journal, science project, etc.)
* Grades based on written pieces, projects and conferences with
students.
SOCIAL STUDIES
* Text - A New Nation - McGraw Hill Series
* Units: Maps/Geography, Native American, Explorers, Colonization/Colonial Life, Revolutionary War, Immigration, Constitution/Forms of Government, Westward Expansion
* Grades based on classwork, participation, homework, tests and projects.
SCIENCE
* Text - Harcourt Brace
* Other-FOSS kits and AIMS activities
* Units: Weather and Space, System of Living Things, Matter and Energy, Outdoor Education
* Scientific Process is stressed. Lab format, hands on, group work
