Supply List
August 23, 2007
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome back! I hope that you all had a relaxing, fun-filled summer and are ready for a new and wonderful year. I’m very happy to be teaching 5th grade again and to have you in my class. This year will be very busy and filled with new learning experiences and exciting activities.
**For the first day of school, I’d like you to bring in one or two items, which represent something you did this summer or something important that happened. Put it/them in a small, unlabeled, brown paper bag. Don’t tell anyone what’s in your bag! We’ll be doing a fun activity with them during the first couple days of school.
**For the second day of school, I would like you to bring in a small shoebox with a lid and lots of cut out colorful images from magazines. These images should represent things that you have an interest in. They can be about sports, movies, books, famous people, animals, colors, places, jobs, etc. We will be covering the entire shoebox with these images so make sure you have enough!
In order to begin the school year successfully and keep organized, I suggest you have the supplies listed below. These supplies do not have to be new. Recycle where you can. Try to bring as many of these items by Thursday or Friday of the first week of school.
I’ve already supplied each student with a plastic homework folder with reading logs included. Please do not purchase anything other than what’s on this list for classroom use. I’ve found that extra supplies in class lead to cluttered desks and backpacks. If there are extra supplies that you would like your child to have at home, that is fine.
1 soft backpack with at least 2 pockets. It will hang in the hall.
1 plain, solid color 3-ring binder that is 3/4 in to 1 inch thick
1 set of binder dividers that have 8 in a package
2 packages of 3 hole, wide ruled binder paper with a red margin (one for school and one for home)
1 Mead Composition Notebook (marble/hard cover)
4 Spiral notebooks in different colors if possible
6 Pocket folders
1 box of #2 pencils or a couple of mechanical pencils with lead refills
1 package of large erasers (Magic Rub is recommended)
3 ball point pens-1 blue, 1 black, 1 red (erasable ok, no jelly/glitter pens)
2 sets of markers, preferably no more than 8-12 to a package (1 thick set and 1 thin set)
1 set of colored pencils, preferably no more than 12-24 to a package
1 box of 24 crayons
1 package of glue sticks
1 average size pencil/supply bag (soft material so it will fit in the desk)
2 highlighters (color of choice)
1 pair of small scissors
2 black Sharpie pens (1 fine, 1 ultra fine)
1 box of tissues for cold season
1 small basic personal calculator
1 full size ruler with inches and centimeters
1 Binder Reminder from Franklin when they become available
Optional Items
1 correction tape or bottle of white out
1 mini stapler and staples
1 handheld pencil sharpener
**Please have ALL of these items labeled with your child’s name**
Students - On Aug. 28th, please put your backpacks on the lunch tables outside of Rm. 14 and go play on the playground and visit with friends. When the bell rings, line up outside of Rm. 14 in two lines, one for girls and one for boys. This will be how we line up every day.
Parents - There will be a large packet of information handed out on the first day of school. Filling out all the forms is going to be YOUR homework! Get your pencils and pens ready! I’d like the packet turned in as soon as possible, but by Tuesday, Sept 4th at the latest.
I also wanted to give you a heads up about our Outdoor Education dates. This year, your child will be going to Outdoor Ed. from October 29th to November 2nd. Yes, your child will be away for Halloween, but it will be the most memorable Halloween ever because they’ll get to spend it at ODE, which is such a unique experience. The ODE Staff makes sure that the kids have something fun to do to celebrate. The cost will be $295 and the money will need to be collected by the second week of October so keep that in the back of your mind We’ll talk more about it on Back to School Night and at the Informational Outdoor Education Meeting. Enjoy your last few days of summer!
Fondly,
Tamara Barbour
